Gerçek adıyla "René Brabazon Raymond" olarak Londra'da doğdu. Rochester'de okula gitti. Okuduktan sonra çocuk ansiklopedileri satmak için ülkeyi dolaştı. O sırada Amerikan romanları okumaya başladı, özellikle James M. Cain. Bu kitaplardan etkilenerek, Amerika'yı hiç görmeden, Amerika'da geçen bir roman yazdı. 1939 yılında "No Orchids for Miss Blandish" adıyla yayınlanan kitap, anında en iyi satanların arasına girdi. Özellikle 2. Dünya Savaşı'nda bulunan askerler arasında çok tutuldu. Chase, seksene yakın kitap yazdı. Bunlardan birçoğu filme de çekildi. 1985 yılında vefat etti.
